A Thank You to our Volunteers

After putting out a call for volunteers in early April, we have received offers of help from over 250 people and we couldn’t be more grateful.

Our volunteering initiative has seen hundreds of members of the community reach out to volunteer with us during this challenging time. Running several initiatives including telephone befriending, helping residents with essential shopping, PPE collections and catering, our volunteering team have been inundated with kind messages and offers of help.

One volunteer, Nicola Ainger, offered to help the catering team at our Saffron Gardens Care Home after being furloughed from her place of work. She now works with the team to prepare meals for 70 residents at Saffron Gardens and 24 residents at our Orchard Grove Reablement Centre.

Nicola Ainger, Volunteer Catering Assistant said: “I have a background in catering and decided to help the team at Saffron Gardens. I wanted to do something that made a huge difference to not only the employees but also the residents too. I’m very much enjoying my time at Brunelcare as a volunteer and I have learnt so much!”

Our catering team at Saffron Gardens prepare 434 meals per day for residents living at the home, which makes a total of 2,170 meals a week and 8,680 meals per month!

Helping to prepare the meals with eight other caterers, including Head Chef Rogemar, Nicola has been a huge help to the team and they have enjoyed working alongside her during this time.

Rogemar Placido, Head Chef at Saffron Gardens said: “It’s been great having Nicola with us. She has helped tremendously the past few weeks while a few of our catering employees have been looking after themselves at home. She’s been a star. People don’t recognise catering employees as being key workers or front line staff, but we are. Volunteering at Brunelcare isn’t just about people helping us, it’s about us helping them. We can teach them new skills, continue person-to-person interactions and Nicola goes homes every day knowing she’s made a huge difference - it’s great!”

We are currently looking for 2 more catering volunteers to assist Rogemar at our Saffron Gardens care home. If you have previous catering experience and would like to apply, email volunteering@brunelcare.org.uk.
