Happy couple Vic and Glennis have been married for 73 years, and they’re just as smitten as ever this Valentine’s Day.
93-year-old Victor and Glennis, who live at our ABC Centre, are the picture of romance as they set to celebrate their 73rd Valentine’s Day as a married couple. The pair met when they were just 17 years old, and have been inseparable ever since.
Growing up only two doors away from each other, the couple admit they used to ‘spy’ on one another from their bedroom windows when they were young, before finally meeting in 1944 when Vic arranged a local dance. The pair fondly remember dancing all night, and they quickly fell in love, tying the knot in 1947.
Glennis said: “I remember the night we met like it was yesterday. Victor had arranged a fabulous dance at Barton Hill, it was great! We danced all night together and then he walked me home, it turned out he was my neighbour I used to ‘spy’ on out my bedroom window.”
Vic and Glennis married while Vic was on a home visit from the Navy in 1947, celebrating at St Anne’s Church, Brislington. Shortly after their marriage, Vic was deployed into the Navy where he served on and off for five years, while Glennis worked at Willis. Vic worked as a bus and coach driver for 40 years following the war, and Glennis looked after the family in St Anne’s.
The couple now live at our ABC Centre in their own self-contained apartment, and enjoy attending coffee mornings, bingo, and arts and crafts sessions.
73 years on, Vic and Glennis are still madly in love, and love spending time and joking around together.
Vic said: “During the war I used to write letters to Glennis, I missed her very much when I was away, we’ve had an amazing life together and I love everything about Glennis. She’s my best friend and it’s an honour to have been married to her for so long. Now, we’ve finally settled down at Brunelcare’s ABC Centre and it’s great.”
The couple have four children, six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, who visit them in their self-contained flat weekly. They will be celebrating Valentine’s Day together at ABC Centre’s Valentine’s Day quiz.
